Gold meets silver on this safari that ends with a relaxing visit to Lake Bunyonyi. On this 4-day trip you will have the chance to observe the silverback mountain gorillas and the golden monkeys in Mgahinga National Park. On your journey westward, you will travel through the mountainous Kigezi region with its grand vistas and landscapes working your way to your adventure tracking mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. A low-key visit to Lake Bunyonyi will close your visit — we hope just the first — to Uganda.

Detailed itinerary

Arrival: Depending upon your itinerary, your safari guide will either pick you up from Entebbe airport and drive you to your hotel, or if you are already in Uganda, your guide will pick you up from your hotel the morning of your Day 1 trip. Please note, accommodations prior to or following the trip can be arranged at additional cost.

Day 1: Transfer to Mgahinga National Park

Following an early breakfast, your guide will pick you up from the hotel and drive along the Masaka-Mbarara Road to Kisoro. You will have a brief stopover at the equator for a photo op and then continue to Mbarara. As you proceed through the southwestern Kigezi region of Uganda, you will see vast expanses of tea and banana plantations. Day 2: Mountain gorilla tracking

Following an early breakfast (your lodge will provide you with a packed lunch), your guide will drive you to the Mgahinga National Park headquarters in time for the pre-tracking briefing. Your passport details will be required to determine your eligibility prior to this briefing. (A photocopy of your passport identity page will be sufficient.) Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will then instruct you regarding proper behavior during your trek and you will then set off on the adventure of your life. Once you have located your gorilla family, you will have one hour to photograph and observe them. You will then trek back to the park headquarters to be awarded you gorilla tracking certificate. You can opt to return directly to your lodge or spend an hour or so visiting with the Batwa community that lives in proximity to the park. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Once again, you will be instructed on proper behavior, this time regarding interactions with the golden monkeys, and then you will start your trek and your 1-hour visit with the golden monkeys.

After tracking the golden monkeys, your safari guide will drive you to your next destination, Kibale and Lake Bunyonyi, with a projected afternoon arrival in time for a late lunch. Following a check in at your lodge, you may take an afternoon boat tour of Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda’s deepest lake. Several island visits are possible. Return to lodge for dinner and overnight.
